Yoga + Body Image, 5 Week Series: Practice and Discussion
September 14, 2015 – October 12, 2015, 6 pm – 7:15 pm
co-facilitated by Millie Jackson and Kimberly Drye, HereNowYoga
Explore yoga and body image from different perspectives in this five week series. Each session will include a short meditation, a guided asana practice, and an exploration of a collection of essays by well known yoga teachers and students from the book Yoga and Body Image: 25 Personal Stories about Beauty, Bravery & Loving Your Body, edited by Melanie Klein & Anna Guest-Jelley.
Body image is shaped over a lifetime through observations, experiences and reactions from others. Many factors influence our image of ourselves-- race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, size, age, class and physical ability. Our self perceptions are distorted as we interpret ourselves not as the miraculous beings we truly are but as falling short to some unrealistic ideal upheld by our culture.
Join in the discussion of the "yoga body" portrayed in today's media. Many miss the benefits of the yoga practice and community because they are being sent the message that they don't fit this image. Let's start a conversation on how to get across the message that every body is a yoga body.
Absolutely everyone is welcome to attend. All levels.
Please read the first section "Making Choices and Creating Change" for the first week.
